Salar de Uyuni & the Altiplano
Salt pans, flamingos & towering volcanoes in Bolivia and Chile
Our photo tour through Bolivia offers fascinating scenes off the beaten path. On our adventurous tour we experience and photograph the giant expanse of the Salar Uyuni with the cactus island of Isla Pescadero. We will see flamingos and the wild vicunas (llamas) and the cute Viscachas the cuddly rabbit of the Andes. Bizarre Rock formations will alternate with endless expanses and steppes.
In San Pedro de Atacama, Chile where we first acclimatize ourselves to the altitude of the Altiplano for 2 days, we will explore the surrounding desert landscapes with it's volcanoes and rock formations. Then we drive across the border to Bolivia where we spend the next 10 days.
Our professional local drivers and guides will accompany us throughout our time in Bolivia.

Morning drive north, through the plateau to Chuvica, from there to drive to the salt lake "Salar de Uyuni". After about an hour's drive over the seemingly infinite bright white salt surface of the lake, we reach the island of Incahuasi (Isla Pescado), without a doubt a highlight. Their huge candelabra cactuses that rise into the steel-blue sky appear in front of the wide, white one Gigantic sandy area. At sunset we take photos on the salt lake.
We spend two nights in Colchani at the Hotel Palacio del Sal, completely made of salt (M, A).

Then we take pictures of the starry sky and practice light painting. (M, A)
May 14: Colchani – Sajama National Park
We leave Colchani today. Our next destination is the Sajama National Park. On the way we will see the second largest salt lake in South America: Coipasa with a size of 2,200 km². The whole region is still free from large tourist crowds and surrounded by impressive volcanoes. In the afternoon we take a walk (approx. 1 hour) to the swamp areas that have formed from the glacier water. This is the ideal nursery for llamas, alpacas and vicuñas. We spend the night in the simple Tomarapi Ecolodge at the foot of the snowy Sajama at around 4,200 m. (M, A).
